Unemployed Wait for Congress to Return From Vacation

(July 6) -- If you're one of the 1.3 million unemployed Americans whose unemployment benefits have expired, Congress' annual Fourth of July recess could not have come at a worse time.

While the U.S. House of Representatives has already approved a new extension of benefits, the Senate has so far failed to do so. The Senate is expected to take up the matter on Monday, when the body returns from its midsummer vacation.

In his weekly radio address, President Barack Obama laid the blame for the lapsed benefits on congressional Republicans.

"... at a time when millions of Americans feel a deep sense of urgency in their own lives, Republican leaders in Washington just don't get it," Obama said.

The extension, if it happens, will take unemployment benefits through Nov. 30 for those eligible. Until such a remedy is passed, however, many unemployed Americans face at least another week without an incoming check.
