In their conBobby Engramtinuing search for offensive weapons, the Cleveland Browns signed veteran wide receiver Bobby Engram to a one-year deal Thursday. Engram has 650 catches and 35 touchdown receptions over 14 NFL seasons.

He signed with Kansas City last season, as the Chiefs hunted for someone to complement Dwayne Bowe, but the experiment fizzled out after just five weeks -- Engram was released having made just five catches. Prior to his K.C. stop, Engram had eight solid years in Seattle. That included his best statistical season, 2007, when he caught 94 passes for 1,147 yards.

Engram also had strong back-to-back seasons in 1998 and '99 with Chicago, hauling in 152 catches for more than 1,900 yards in that short window, but played just three games for the Bears in 2000 before departing for the Seahawks.

How long he'll stick with the Browns will be interesting to monitor. Cleveland badly needs help at the receiver position -- last year's team leaders in receptions, Mohammed Massaquoi and running back Jerome Harrison, had just 34 apiece.

Engram does have history with new Browns GM Mike Holmgren, Engram's coach during his Seattle days. That ought to buy him an opportunity to compete during Cleveland's training camp, but anything beyond that will come down to how much juice Engram has left in his 37-year-old legs. If last season was any indication, there's not much.
