Here's what's happening around the National Football League on Friday, July 9, 2010:• Lions president Tom Lewand pleaded guilty Friday to a charge of operating a vehicle while visibly impaired, The Detroit News reported. He was given six months probation, fined $532 and ordered to attend an outpatient alcohol recovery program.
Lewand was arrested on June 26 for suspicion of driving under the influence.
He initially refused a breathalyzer, then later blew a 0.21 and a 0.20, well over Michigan's legal limit of 0.08. According to the News, Lewand told Judge Daniel L. Sutton that he had "several" vodka drinks before getting behind the wheel.
Lewand released a statement to a Detroit TV station shortly after his arrest:
"I am deeply sorry for my actions and take full responsibility for them," the statement read. "As a person in active recovery, I am committed to taking all necessary steps to insure nothing like this ever happens again."
The NFL has yet to offer a ruling on Lewand's case, but he could face some form of discipline, likely a fine.
