Jeff BagwellThe Astros announced Sunday that hitting coach Sean Berry has been fired and will be replaced in the role by the team's former All-Star first baseman Jeff Bagwell after the All-Star break. Houston is currently second-to-last in the National League in runs scored with 305, ahead of only the Pirates.

Bagwell played for the Astros from 1991-2005, winning a Rookie of the Year Award in 1991, an MVP in 1994 and making four All-Star teams. He hit 449 homers in his 15 seasons, and his .408 OBP is the 40th-best in the history of baseball. He'll be eligible for the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time this winter.

Since his retirment, he's worked in the Astros' front office. He's certainly not the first high-profile first baseman to reenter the public spotlight as a hitting coach for his old team, though. Across the field from the Astros Sunday will be Mark McGwire in the Cardinals' dugout, where he's served as hitting coach all season.

The Cardinals' offensive production hasn't changed much this year under Big Mac; they're down to 4.45 runs per game in 2010 after scoring 4.51 in 2009. The Astros are obviously hoping Bagwell can have a bigger impact even though there's only so much a coach can do with a lineup that includes Tommy Manzella, Humberto Quintero, and Michael Bourn.
