Here's what's happening around the National Football League on Monday, July 12, 2010:• Just like last offseason, as he danced around the issue of returning to the NFL, not to mention four summers before that, Brett Favre has begun working out with Oak Grove High School's football team in Hattiesburg, Miss. And according to the Associated Press, Favre is "getting along just fine" on his surgically repaired left ankle.
At this point, the veteran QB's return for a 20th season seems inevitable.
"He ain't working out for no reason," said Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, the starter if Favre opts not to return. "I welcome him back. There's nothing I can do about it, so I'm going to welcome him back and hopefully get to the Super Bowl."
Last year, Favre joined the Vikings just prior to the team's second preseason game. Minnesota has already cleared him to follow a similar timeline if he opts to play football this season.
• Lions president Tom Lewand told The Detroit News that he has spoken with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in light of Lewand's recent arrest. Goodel has not yet handed Lewand a punishment, but Lewand expects one.
"I understand very clearly that the personal conduct policy of the NFL applies to everybody, myself included," he said. "I have complete trust in the commissioner that his judgment will be appropriate and we'll move on to those next steps."
Lewand was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence -- he later blew a .21 and .20 on a breathalyzer; Michigan's legal limit is .08 -- and later pleaded guilty to a charge of operating a vehicle while visibly impaired, which included a $532 fine, probation and admittance into an outpatient recovery program.
"As I said before, I offer my complete apologies for my actions. I take full responsibility for them," Lewand said.
"I'm glad that this portion of those consequences for my actions is completed and I look forward to coming out of this a stronger and better person as a result of it."

• The Lions extended QB Shaun Hill's contract through 2011. Detroit traded a 2011 draft pick to San Francisco for Hill earlier this offseason. He's expected to be the backup to Matthew Stafford.
• Miami signed fifth-round S Reshad Jones to a five-year deal, the Sun Sentinel reported. Jones, out of the University of Georgia, is expected to compete for a starting job in the secondary.
• The Raiders signed fifth-round CB Walter McFadden (Auburn) to a four-year deal.
Injury Ward
• Bears running back Matt Forte spent most of the 2009 season dealing with injuries, though he started all 16 games. He spent this offseason working on getting in better shape to avoid some of the bumps and bruises this year.
"He made a point to get back and get his body in better shape," Bears running backs coach Tim Spencer told ChicagoBears.com. "Matt is one of those guys you kind of have to temper a little bit. But he's gotten stronger in his lower body and his upper body. He's changed his body in terms of the way he looks. His work ethic is second to none."
