NY Bomber Calls Plot 'Revenge' for 'Martyrs'
"I hope that the hearts of the Muslims will be pleased with this attack," Shahzad says in the video, posted on the BBC's website. "You will see that the Muslim war has just started."
The video was broadcast on the al-Arabiya TV station. In it, Shahzad, 30, is dressed in traditional Pakistani clothes and speaks in English.
In a court appearance last month, Shahzad pleaded guilty to an attempt to blow up a car with a gasoline-and-propane bomb in New York's Times Square on May 1. A street vendor saw smoke coming out of the car and alerted authorities.
Shahzad was arrested two days later as he tried to take a flight to Dubai.
In his court appearance, Shahzad appeared unrepentant and described himself as a "Muslim soldier."
In the video, Shahzad dedicates his attack to Baytullah Mehsud of the Pakastani Taliban and Abu Musaab al-Zarqawi, leader of al-Qaida in Iraq. U.S. forces killed both men. Shahzad describes them as "martyrs."
"This attack on the United States will also be a revenge attack for all the mujahedeen," Shahzad said. "I will take revenge on their behalf."
Shahzad also speaks confidently of Islam triumphing over the West.
"Islam will spread on the whole world and democracy will be defeated," Shahzad said. "The word of Allah shall be supreme."
