BP Cap Update: Testing Commences, Oil Finally Stops Flowing Into the Gulf!

(July 15) -- Finally some truly promising news out of the Gulf!

BP has tentatively begun the pressure tests of its new containment cap system this afternoon following a worrisome leak and last-minute, middle-of-the-night fix on Tuesday.

Even better, the system appears to be working like a charm. The company announced that oil has officially ceased flowing into the Atlantic for the first time since the spill began on April 20 (almost three months ago to the day). The oil was stopped at 2:25 p.m. CDT, according to The Associated Press.

Of course, BP was quick to remind observers that "this will not be an indication that oil and gas flow from the wellbore has been permanently stopped." Two relief wells will still be necessary in order to achieve that goal.

But at the very least, the most recent news means that BP might, might be able to contain (read: siphon) the oil until August, when drilling on the relief wells is expected to be finished.

Meanwhile, the pressure test will continue for at least another six hours, at which point measurements will be reviewed by the company and the federal science team, to decide whether or not the valves on the cap can safely and effectively remain closed, trapping all the oil without too much build-up or any further leaks.

BP says it will make another update on the situation at 6:30 p.m. CDT.
