Admit it, you don't know what David Kahn is doing. I don't know what he's doing. An avocado might know better. Oftentimes, it seems like Kahn himself has no idea what his plan in Minnesota is -- or, if there is one, why in the world it makes a lick of sense. But one thing's for sure: Never is the Minnesota Timberwolves' general manager more of a danger to himself and others than when he opens his mouth.
Maybe Kahn is an eccentric genius, and we'll all look like fools in a couple of seasons. More likely, he'll have lost his job for not drafting DeMarcus Cousins, among other things. Kahn, though, doesn't just take a peculiar approach to rebuilding an NBA franchise; he's also a supremely weird dude.
I would go so far as to say that, whatever the meaning of his roster moves, Kahn is his own worst enemy when it comes to backing them up. Besides his unusual demeanor, which suggests he recently woke from a thousand-year sleep on a subcontinental UFO, Kahn simply can't do an interview without uttering something truly improbable.
The latest, and most fantastic, instance of this would have to be Kahn's time at the Vegas broadcast table Wednesday, when he got to talking with Chris Webber and Matt Winer about his summer of love. Check out the video below.
Remember, these conversations are usually ambling and mildly informative, like a travel brochure for the team's next season.
Inexplicably, Kahn's highest praise, and apparently, greatest level of excitement, is reserved for Darko Milicic. Darko's re-signing was Kahn most controversial, and least defensible, act of the off-season. And yet Kahn raves about the human punchline, comparing his skill level to Vlade Divac. Then, we hear that Darko just needs to find the right situation, like Webber -- who, according to Kahn, took until Sacramento to really start contributing.
C-Webb politely disagrees -- well, as politely as one can -- but at the same time, seems just as shocked as anyone else hearing this. On the plus side, we now have a new nickname for Darko: "Manna" Milicic.
