The Indians placed closer Kerry Wood on the disabled list with a blister on his right index finger. It is his second DL stint of the season, and Jensen Lewis was called up from Triple-A Columbus to take his place. The move is retroactive to Monday, meaning Wood will be eligible to return to the active roster on July 27.
The right-hander, who has eight saves and a 6.30 ERA on the season, was expected to be one of the top relievers available before the trade deadline this year, but, coming off an injury, he'll have little time to re-establish his value before July 31, assuming he returns after the minimum.
Wood, 33, is signed through this season for $10.5 million, with a team option of $11 million for 2011.
Because of the high salary -- and club option for next year -- it's certainly possible that Wood could sneak through waivers after the July 31 deadine, meaning the Cleveland hurler could still end up helping another club in 2010.
