Dell DempsIn Las Vegas for NBA Summer League, I asked Dell Demps if it was stressful dealing with all of the interviews for various positions on top of trying to scout games, talk to players, and continue the Spurs/Toros business. He laughed and said "No, actually, it's been pretty fun."

It probably just got a lot more fun.

Marc Stein reports tonight that after gaining the top spot for the New Orleans Hornets' GM position, the deal is done. Stein reports that the Hornets have reached an agreement in principle with Demps for the position. The move means a colossal shift in how the team will be run in the future, with new ownership set to take the reins.

The Hornets have relied on veteran players with very little to no development in place. They have hired stop gaps, fringe players that were not real long-term solutions. They rarely if at all used their NBA D-League affiliate. In Demps, they get a professional who brings the whole package. Demps has experience with development as manager of the D-League Austin Toros (owned by the Spurs). He has experience in drafting top notch players in high positions as the Spurs have tagged multiple starters in the high 20's. And he's a former player, familiar with the trials and tribulations of the NBA player.

Demps joins new head coach Monty Williams as the second branch of the Popovich tree to join the Hornets' organization. With the Hornets needing to watch over the development of Darren Collison and Marcus Thornton and improve their roster with younger players, it's hard to argue with Demps as the choice.

The biggest question, though, still remains: Can he keep Chris Paul?
