Thierry Henry Suffers Through Awkward Interview on FOX Morning Show
But his Wednesday morning appearance on FOX's New York morning show, "Good Day New York" (clip seen below), won't exactly be remembered as a high point in U.S. soccer journalism.
Interviewers Rosanna Scotto and Greg Kelly displayed a level of footy ignorance that has long been the bane of every diehard U.S. soccer fan's existence. From asking Henry how it felt to be coming off of a World Cup title (France didn't even make it out of group play in 2010) to making the hackneyed quips about Americans not liking soccer because it's low scoring, it was obvious from the get-go that neither host did much, if any, preparation for the segment.
Soccer blog MLS Talk called the spot "one of the worst soccer interviews you'll ever see." Yet while the interview was embarrassing, dubbing it the worst ever is debatable. The interview was certainly not befitting of an international sports star of Henry's wattage, but those familiar with Scotto and Kelly know that that their morning show's shtick is to walk the line between extremely soft journalism and cable-access amateur hour. The interview would've been a far greater embarrassment if it was conducted by, say, a stateside journalist who was expected to actually know something about soccer.
And, if nothing else, at least those soccer fans who suffered through the spot were able to extract some (admittedly flimsy) news nuggets from it. For instance, Henry is still house-hunting since arriving in the states, but wants to live in downtown Manhattan. Henry also admitted that he found the vuvuzelas at the World Cup "pretty annoying, to be honest."
But, at the end of the day, it is possible to conduct a lighthearted interview with a respected star like Henry without insulting him. Maybe Scotto and Kelly should've watched the Fallon clip below to see just how that's executed.
