With the Cleveland Browns on the verge of reporting for training camp, they are still trying to get first-round pick Joe Haden signed and in for workouts. In fact, the team's top three draft picks remain unsigned. However, their most well-known pick has agreed to terms. Former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy will be in camp on time, as he reached a deal with the Browns Thursday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Rookies report for camp Friday, with the full squad due to arrive July 30.
McCoy gets a four-year deal worth close to $5 million. His signing bonus is around $750,000. The Plain Dealer cited a league source in reporting the contract. McCoy's deal represents quite a jump over the same pick in the 2008 draft, but it's believed McCoy is getting more because he is a quarterback.
Off a storied career at Texas, where McCoy started 53 games over his four-year career. McCoy led the Longhorns to the postseason in each year, and culminated it with a trip to New York for the 2008 Heisman Trophy ceremony (he finished second to new Rams quarterback Sam Bradford in the voting), and then Texas played in the 2010 BCS National Championship. McCoy was injured on the Longhorns' opening drive, and he was unable to return as Alabama won going away.
Overall, McCoy threw 112 touchdown passes, ran for 20 more, and completed over 70 percent of his passes in college. He might not have the biggest frame or loads of arm strength, but he won a ton of games, and he played for a big-time program in a big-time conference.
In Cleveland, McCoy is going to have a real chance to compete right away. The Browns picked up veterans Jake Delhomme, 35, and Seneca Wallace, 29, during the offseason, but neither is a long-term solution. Delhomme is expected to start the season opener, but it's uncertain how he'll perform after a dreadful run last year in Carolina. Wallace is a player team president Mike Holmgren is familiar with from their time in Seattle. It's not expected that he'll be any real threat to start a lot of games.
Instead, if Delhomme struggles, and the Browns aren't performing, look for Holmgren and head coach Eric Mangini to tab McCoy as the starter. That McCoy is going to be in camp on time this weekend can only help his chances. If he can perform well in August, he will at least give Holmgren and Mangini something to think about if/when Delhomme isn't getting the job done.
