Obama Family to Lead by Example, Will Vacation on Gulf Coast in August
Obama has frequently encouraged Americans to head to Gulf Coast beaches that have remained open during the BP oil spill, the Associated Press reported. Now, it appears he will be leading by example.
The vacation will be the fifth time that the president has visited the region since the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded and oil began spewing into the Gulf of Mexico. As yet, there are no details on where in Florida the first family will stay.
By the time the Obamas arrive, the tropical depression that is likely to become Tropical Storm Bonnie should be long gone.
According to a new study released today by Oxford Economics and the U.S. Travel Association, the Gulf Coast could see losses of $22.7 billion in tourism revenues because of the oil spill.
The report called for what it termed "an aggressive and comprehensive $500 million effort to attract visitors to the Gulf Coast" in an effort to mitigate losses.
Fortunately for the region's economy, NOAA has announced that a third of the gulf fishing area previously closed due to the spill is being reopened.
