(July 23) -- According to the National Hurricane Center, hurricane season in the Atlantic begins on June 1, and ends on Nov. 30.

Meanwhile, in the Eastern Pacific, the season starts two weeks earlier, on May 15, and ends on June 1.

Typically, September is the busiest month of the season. While the vast majority of tropical cyclones form during hurricane season, more than 30 cyclones have formed from December to May since 1870. In 2007, for example, Subtropical Storm Andrea formed off the coast of Daytona Beach, Fla., on May 9. On Dec. 10 of that same year, Subtropical Storm Olga plowed ashore in the Dominican Republic. Forty people were killed in the storm.
