(July 23) -- A tropical storm has maximum sustained wind speeds of between 39 and 73 mph. Tropical cyclones with maximum sustained wind speeds higher than 73 mph are classified as hurricanes. Tropical cyclones with maximum sustained wind speeds at or below 38 mph are classified as tropical depressions.
