OAKLAND, Calif. -- The A's signed catcher Kurt Suzuki to a four-year, $16.25-million contract on Friday, buying him through his arbitration years and possibly into the first year of free agency, if an $8.5 million option is exercised in 2014.Suzuki, 26, is the best position player the A's have developed since Nick Swisher. A career .269 hitter, Suzuki is on pace for a third consecutive season of increased power. He hit seven homers in 2008, 15 in 2009 and he already has 10 this season. He is also solid behind the plate, and he works well with the pitchers.
The new deal supercedes his previous 2010 contract. This year's salary will be $600,000 (pro-rated) plus a $150,000 bonus. Next year's salary will be $3.4 million, followed by $5 million in 2012 and $6.45 million in 2013. The option is $8.5 million, or a $650,000 buyout, but if he plays 118 games in 2013, it will automatically vest at $9.25 million.
