Nomar Garciaparra is once again going to bat for the city of Boston. The former Red Sox shortstop is lobbying for National Tequila Day -- July 24 -- to be recognized as an official holiday for the city of Boston. Garciaparra has pledged his support to the "Boston Tea-quila Party" in his quest to have this "holiday" be deemed official. It may seem like a task too substantial for one man to handle, even if that man is Nomar Garciaparra. But fortunately for him, he doesn't have to go it alone. With the help of Jose Cuervo -- a popular brand of tequila... I'm told -- Nomar is using an all day "American Gladiator-style" competition, known as the CuervoGames, to bring awareness to his favorite holiday.
In a press release, Garciaparra said that he was more than happy to be involved with the Boston Tea-quila Party.
No better way? My Italian-American mustache doesn't buy that. But to each his own."When I heard about Jose Cuervo's "Tea-quila Party" mission, I knew I wanted to lend my support," said Garciaparra. "As a Mexican-American and a former Boston big leaguer, there's no better way is there to pay tribute to my heritage than with an all-day celebration in my favorite city"
I get that Garciaparra is a fan of tequila and I realize that the CuervoGames are going to be an exciting mixture of margarita mix-offs and high-wire obstacle courses, but his fight to have the day recognized as a city holiday?
Maybe he wanted suspension of alternate-side parking on that day?
Ami-Lynn Bakshi, Vice President, Tequila Marketing, Diageo, is hoping to make the CuervoGames an annual event in Boston.
The city of Boston already recognizes Patriots' Day as an official holiday that has taken over a festive feel with the marathon and Yankees versus Red Sox game taking place annually as part of the celebration," Bakshi continued. "We hope that Mayor Menino will rally behind National Tequila Day the same way and perhaps even make CuervoGames an annual installment on July 24."Well, you know what I always say about the CuervoGames: Let's get through this one before we start talking about the next one.
The CuervoGames will take place at City Hall Plaza in Boston, on Saturday, July 24.
