In the top of the second inning of the Orioles' fourth game this season, Julio Lugo replaced Brian Roberts at second base after the Baltimore stalwart suffered an abdominal strain. No one had any inkling at the time that Roberts wouldn't see the field again until late July, but here we are. Roberts was finally activated from the 60-day disabled list Friday afternoon, putting him in line to make his first big league appearance since April 9. The Orioles designated Scott Moore for assignment to clear the necessary roster space.
In the three full games Roberts played before landing on the disabled list, the Orioles went 1-2. So, yes, their winning percentage has dipped a bit from .333 to .316 in his absence, but those numbers are quite a bit more stark when the sample size is 95 games as opposed to three.
It goes without saying that the Orioles have been terrible, and a terrible disappointment, this season. Some of that surely can be attributed to missing Roberts, but the underwhelming performances of those who have been healthy all year -- most notably a horrid pitching staff -- have been the prime factor in the Orioles' free fall.
Either way, the 32-year-old Orioles lifer will once again be left to play out the string in August and September and await the next phase of a rebuilding process that feels more like a treadmill. For now, Roberts will have to be satisfied with simply being able to play every day again, even if there isn't anything of note on the line.
