Robbers Grab $100,000 in State Fair Heist

(July 23) -- Two armed men wearing disguises and food-service uniforms walked into an unguarded money-counting area at the California State Fair in Sacramento and hit the mother lode -- $100,000 in cash.

The robbery took place late Wednesday, as the fair was closing down. Police suspect the robbers worked for the catering company that was targeted, or knew there wouldn't be guards present when workers counted money from the day's take.

CalExpo, which operates the state fairgrounds, has its own police department, but no security people were apparently in the vicinity of the counting room when the robbery took place.

Norb Bartosik, general manager of the fair, told The Sacramento Bee that it was up to the vendor, Ovations Food Services, to provide its own security in the counting room and did not know why none had been arranged.

"That's a decision that Ovations makes on its own," Bartosik said. "That's not up to us."

Bartosik also said police had suspects but declined to go into detail. He said it was the first robbery of its kind in the fair's 156-year history.

The state fair opened July 14 and runs through Aug. 1.
