The Cubs Want Carlos Zambrano to Apologize

Carlos ZambranoCarlos Zambrano made his first rehab appearance with the Iowa Cubs yesterday, but he still hasn't talked to the media about it. The reason for that? He's not allowed to talk to the media until he apologizes to his teammates on the Cubs. Since getting into a shouting match with Derrek Lee, Ted Lilly is apparently the only Cub to talk to Zambrano.

"I think it's more important for him to clear that hurdle first," Cubs' manager Lou Piniella told the Chicago Tribune. "And once he does that, then talk to the media."

You may recognize this disciplinary strategy as the universal "No Oreos until you apologize to Billy for knocking his block fortress over" strategy that's employed by kindergarten teachers across America. And really, the longer this whole scuffle drags on the more the comparison to six-year olds feels pretty apt.

The Cubs also told the Trib that they expect Zambrano back either at the end of July or beginning of August, but there's no word if that return-date is apology-dependent as well. If the Cubs are planning on shopping Zambrano to other teams in the off-season, they need him on the field proving that he can still pitch. But for nearly a month now, they've been saying that he has to apologize for both sides to be able to move on past the June 25th incident. Who will cave first?
