(June 23) -- There are several steps that every pet owner should take in the event of a hurricane. The advice from state and local officials varies depending on the type of animal in question. AOL has broken down the animals into two categories: pets and livestock. In both cases, the most prudent measures involve steps to take before a hurricane arrives, and mirror the safety steps recommended for human beings.

Pets
  • Identify hotels that accept pets.
  • Make a list of pet boarding facilities in areas outside the affected hurricane zone.
  • Pack an emergency pet kit that includes collars, leashes, pet identification, pet carrier, a 3-to-5-day supply of food and water and photographs of your pet in the event that you get separated from it.
  • Exotic pets may require special transportation, so be sure to identify those needs before a hurricane approaches.
Livestock
  • Stockpile enough hay and water to last a week.
  • Stock up on veterinary supplies such as bandages and antibiotics.
  • Nail down loose lumber and secure possible projectiles in heavy wind conditions.
  • Evacuate livestock from low-lying areas.
