Terrell Owens is still looking for a new team, but the Rams and Bengals have emerged as potential spots based on recent reports.ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Saturday that the Rams have intensified T.O. discussions, according to sources close to the player and team. A high-ranking Rams official also told ESPN that a formal offer for Owens could come on Monday. Even though Owens has stated in the past that he wants to sign with a playoff contender, sources told ESPN that T.O.'s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, let the Rams know Owens would definitely consider their offer.
Jay Glazer of FOX Sports tweeted that Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo and GM Billy Devaney would meet Monday morning to make a firm decision on whether they'll seriously pursue Owens, according to his sources.
Meanwhile, Chad Ochocinco and Carson Palmer are reportedly pushing for the Bengals to sign Owens to a deal. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday that Palmer has been working out regularly with T.O., according to a team source. Schefter also reported that Palmer has lobbied to the Bengals and told them Owens could be a big asset.
Ochocinco even went so far as to declare Owens was "coming soon" with an amusing "Batman and Robin" photoshopped image on his Twitter account. "I am so excited for training camp, especially since Batman is coming to join me," Ochocinco tweeted on Saturday. However, Rosenhaus has denied that a deal with the Bengals is imminent, according to an NFL.com report.
The Bengals have already made a splash to bolster their offensive weapons, acquiring veteran Antonio Bryant via free agency, and drafting receiver Jordan Shipley and tight end Jermaine Gresham in April.
In an interview with the NFL Network on Friday, Owens spoke about his desire to sign with a contender. "It has to be the right situation for me," Owens said. "I'm going in on my 15th season, so I want to go to a team that's on the cusp of making it to the playoffs and really having a team want me and feel that I can come in and be an asset to their ball club."
St. Louis clearly has the greater need for Owens given its current crop of wideouts. Even coming off a down year, Owens' output of 829 yards receiving was 240 yards more than the Rams' leading receiver, Donnie Avery. But helping a team that finished 1-15 last season may not be too enticing for Owens.
Both the Bengals and Rams begin training camp on July 28, so it's expected that if either team wants to sign Owens, the decision would come sooner than later.
