Kevin MawaeHere's what's happening around the National Football League on Monday, July 27:

• Free-agent center Kevin Mawae, head of the NFL Players' Association, has said repeatedly this summer that his union position has prevented him from drumming up interest on the open market. That hasn't stopped him from speaking his mind, however.

On ESPN Radio's "Mike and Mike" show Monday, Mawae questioned the proposed idea of an 18-game season.

"You want two extra games at the back end of the season? What's in it for us?" Mawae said. "It's a little bit more complicated than just saying, 'Let's swap out two games from the preseason and add two games at the end of the regular season.' There's health and safety issues, which is our biggest concern from a player's standpoint."

Tennessee let the 39-year-old Mawae walk, despite the fact that Mawae started all 16 games at center for the Titans last season. He has 238 career starts in 16 seasons, but has not received much interest as a free agent.

• Speaking of free agents going unnoticed this summer ...

Edgerrin James has yet to officially hang up his cleats and told the Fort Myers News-Press that he would return to the NFL if the right opportunity presented itself.

"You never search. You don't have to search. My resume is out there. The one thing about me is you know what you're going to get," James said. "I've always been one of the best pass protectors out there. I know I can block and I can help protect those $20 million a year quarterbacks."

James played just seven games for Seattle last season and rushed for a mere 125 yards.

• Denver agreed to a four-year deal with third-round WR Eric Decker (Minnesota).

• The Saints announced the signing of second-round OT Charles Brown (USC) to a four-year deal.

• Oakland announced the signing of second-round DE Lamarr Houston (Texas).

• Cleveland signed rookie RB Montario Hardesty (Tennessee) to a four-year deal, according to the National Football Post. Hardesty was a second-round pick in April's draft.

• Indianapolis agreed to terms with fifth-round TE Brody Eldridge (Oklahoma) on a four-year deal.

Packers second-round DT Mike Neal (Purdue) tweeted that he'd agreed to terms with Green Bay.
