According to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, 2-year-old Sylar Newton of Flagstaff was last seen sleeping in a tent with his family on Sunday at the Beaver Creek Campgrounds, about 50 miles south of Flagstaff. He was discovered missing about 1:45 a.m.
Sylar was camping with a woman who was in the process of adopting him, Christina Priem, as well as her two children and her mother. Investigators say they know the identity but not the current whereabouts of the boy's biological mother, CBS 5 News reported.
Despite deploying more than 50 searchers in the campground area directly following the child's disappearance, authorities have found no sign of him. Aerial searches and bloodhound teams also came up empty.
As part of the investigation, deputies towed two vehicles from the site where the child went missing and conducted interviews with 25 people staying at the campground.
Homicide investigators have been on the scene, but authorities say their presence is routine and not necessarily indicative of foul play.
Calls for comment to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office were not returned today. In an interview with The Arizona Republic, however, sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said investigators are operating under the assumption that Syler wandered off. D'Evelyn also said the search would continue until investigators find the boy.
Sylar was wearing only a diaper at the time he went missing. He is described as 3 feet tall and 20 pounds, with light brown hair and blue eyes.
Anyone with information about the missing boy is urged to contact the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office at 928-771-3260.
