For only the second time in recorded history, a tornado struck the Bronx, N.Y., on Sunday. The cyclone touched down around 2:50 p.m., packing winds in excess of 100 miles per hour, the National Weather Service confirms. Today, downed trees, smashed vehicles and power lines littered the Riverdale section of the borough that resides just north of Manhattan.
There have been seven reported injuries and no deaths thus far, notes the New York Daily News.
Power outages stretched from New Jersey to Connecticut to Long Island after what residents described as a shockingly violent storm.
"The skies turned black, the wind kicked up within a matter of five minutes. You see the damage that was done here. We're just grateful nobody was severely injured or killed," resident Dan Reingold told ABC News.
Video shot by a Bronx resident captured the fury of the storm as it broke across the region.
