Contrary to previous reports, Stephon Marbury never rejected an offer to join LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade on the Miami Heat, the player told The New York Post. "It's total nonsense, why would I turn down a chance to play for the Miami Heat?" Marbury said from Beijing, where he's making several promotional appearances. "The report was a fabrication."
The confusion, it seems, stems from a faulty translation by a reporter from the People's Daily of China, a Chinese-language newspaper, who interviewed Marbury about Miami's potential interest in the guard. Marbury played in China last season for Shanxi, where he averaged 22.9 points, 9.5 assists and 2.6 steals in 15 games.
"They (the Heat) wanted a point guard," he was quoted as saying. "But I don't think a point guard would do much in the team as they've already had the Three Guys (Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh)."
Even after re-signing Carlos Arroyo, the Heat may still add another point guard before the start of the season, but it would be at least a minor surprise if Marbury, who's appeared in just 47 NBA games since the 2006-07 season and was a non-factor for the Boston Celtics in 2008-09, was being seriously considered. But, as he has now made clear, he does not want his chances, no matter how slight they are, to be lost in translation.
