DALLAS -- Texas A&M wasted little time in finding a replacement for recently departed receivers coach Steve Kragthorpe (pictured right, when he was the Louisville head coach).A&M head coach Mike Sherman confirmed Monday that Troy Walters, the former eight-year NFL veteran and former Stanford standout receiver, has been hired to replace Kragthorpe with the opening of fall camp just two weeks away. Walters had spent last season as the offensive coordinator under Trent Miles at Division I-AA Indiana State.
Having worked in the Indianapolis Colts organization previously and also having worked for Miles, who coached under Sherman with the Green Bay Packers, Walters makes a good fit in a difficultly timed situation.
"He's been in the system," Sherman said, during the first day of the Big 12 football media days. "A lot of the language -- he's very familiar with the West Coast terminology, which is what our base is."
Sherman had hoped in time that Kragthorpe might be able to return to his coaching duties, but Kragthorpe informed him last week that he needed to focus on his family and not coaching at this point.
"Steve decided that that was in his and his family's best interest," Sherman said. "I respected him for it. He made a family decision, a tough decision, but it was what was best for his family, and our thoughts and prayers go out to he and his family."
