GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Florida State will be back, but Virginia Tech will be even better, according to the league media vote at the preseason football kickoff.The Hokies received 50 first-place votes for the ACC championship, easily outdistancing the second-place Seminoles.
However, Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder was the big winner in preseason player of the year voting. Ponder, who has been touted by the ACC as a Heisman candidate, received 45 votes, beating out Ryan Williams and Tyrod Taylor of Virginia Tech.
Ponder led the ACC in total offense through nine games last season before a shoulder injury ended his season in early November.
The Hokies finished 10-3 last season and return a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in Ryan Williams and Darren Evans. Florida State finished 7-6 in 2009, in the final year under Bobby Bowden.
Clemson, Boston College, NC State, Wake Forest and Maryland rounded out the ACC's Atlantic Division behind Florida State.
Miami, defending ACC champion Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Duke and Virginia followed Virginia Tech.
