The Orange County Sheriff's Office in Orlando announced on Tuesday morning that amateur kickboxer Adrienne Simmons passed away after she was knocked unconscious during an International Kickboxing Federation fight in Orlando (Fl) on Sunday. She was 34 years old.

According to WFTV
, Simmons – who was from Atlanta – suffered the injury in the third round of a three-round fight against Lindsay Scheer. Scheer landed a left hook that hurt Simmons and created immediate swelling. She was treated by a doctor in the ring.

Simmons' boyfriend, Chike Ajudua, and her trainer, were upset that no ambulance was present at the fight to transport her immediately to the hospital. Simmons was in critical condition by the time she arrived at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The organizer of the fight, Steve Fossum, said that he arranged for emergency crews to be on standby at a nearby fire station. "Because they were so close and it was so easy to get to. They could be there in a two- to three-minute call time," Fossom told WFTV.

No criminal charges have been filed and Fossum told WFTV that it was one of the first incidents of the kind in his organization's history.

Ajudua also told WFTV that Simmons was on her way to becoming a teacher and loved fighting because she wanted to feel stronger.
