Osi Umenyiora, the former All-Pro defensive end, has been told he needs surgery to ease the pain on a hip he originally injured in 2006.Umenyiora, who lost his starting job with the New York Giants last year, has declined, saying he will wait until the end of the season, according to Mike Garafolo of The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J.
Umenyiora's performance has declined in the last two seasons after his 13 sacks in 2007 when he helped lead the Giants to their surprise Super Bowl title. He missed the 2008 season with a knee injury and was demoted to a third-down pass-rusher last year during a season in which he also criticized defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, who was fired after the team allowed the most points by any Giants team since 1966.
According to Garafolo, Umenyiora was told by hip specialist Marc Philippon that only surgery can ease the pain from a torn hip flexor that caused him to miss the last five games of the 2006 season. Phillipon and the Giants' medical staff agreed to put off the surgery because, they said, Umenyiora can't make it worse by playing.
Umenyiora was replaced last season as the starting right defensive end last season by Mathias Kiwanuka, a former first-round pick, and the Giants also drafted another pass rusher, Jason Pierre-Paul in the first round. Kiwanuka, Umenyiora and left end Justin Tuck are expected to be the primary ends in the New York defense while Pierre-Paul, who has unlimited potential but limited college experience, adjusts to the NFL.
