When Miguel Batista had to make an emergency start on Wednesday for Stephen Strasburg, he was greeted by the Nationals faithful with boos. Even if it wasn't his fault, you could understand fans being angered about paying to see the young phenom Strasburg and ending up with the old Batista.Batista's five-inning performance was very Strasburg-ian, but after the game he was asked about the boos he heard and inadvertently hurt the feelings of a lovely young lady in Iowa. Batista compared his appearance to someone going to see Miss Universe and ending up with Miss Iowa.
Miss Iowa did not take too kindly to Batista's remark, wondering if he could walk a runway in a bathing suit. I'm guessing he could, but he probably just doesn't want to. Either way, Batista clarified his remark on Wednesday and wants Katherine Connors to know that she's gorgeous.
The Washington Post's Nationals beat reporter Adam Kilgore caught up with Batista on Wednesday and asked him if he'd ever seen a picture of Miss Iowa.
"You mean Katherine Connors?" Batista told Kilgore. "Yeah, she's gorgeous. Gorgeous.
"People started booing me, and they hadn't seen me throw a pitch yet. It's like you hear Miss Iowa, and you say, 'Iowa?' And then you see her up close and you say, 'Wow, she's gorgeous.' "
To make sure he earns Miss Connors' forgiveness, Batista also sent her flowers and said he hopes they arrive on Wednesday.
