Reports are sketchy, but the Mexican government is said to have killed one of its most wanted drug traffickers, Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel, in a shootout today in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara.
Coronel was indicted in 2003 by a federal grand jury in Texas. The U.S. government offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest. Dubbed the "King of Ice" because he was known to sell methamphetamine, Coronel was a high-ranking member of the Sinaloa drug cartel, Reuters reported. According to the FBI, Coronel also went by several other aliases, including Don Nacho, Nacho, Nachito and El Ingenerio.
Born in 1945, Coronel was accused of helping run a drug-smuggling network that operated between South America and the United States, which is the world's largest consumer of cocaine and methamphetamine.
An estimated 26,000 people have been killed in the drug war that has gripped Mexico over the past three and a half years.
