FanHouse's college football staff provides you with a personal quarterback. We do the primary and secondary reads for you so you can properly start your day. FanHouse will do a Five-Step Drop several times a week during the summer and then daily once preseason practice starts.1. Adrian Peterson amassed 4,047 yards on 747 carries during his three seasons for Oklahoma, but that number would have been far more impressive had he not missed eight games due to injury his junior year. Remember, he was the Heisman runner-up as a freshman in 2004. So if you mention a running back in the same breath, Oklahoma fans are likely to be worked into a frenzy.
And Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops just went there with the Sooners' current tailback, DeMarco Murray.
"We really anticipate him having a really big year for us,'' Stoops told the Dallas Morning News. "We're hoping in line of similar to a guy like Adrian Peterson -- that kind of opportunity to run the ball or have his hands on the ball that number of times is what we're hoping for.''
Murray carried the ball 171 times last season, gaining 705 yards and scoring eight touchdowns. He also added 522 yards and four touchdowns on 41 receptions.
Sure, he's a solid runner and has battled injuries, but that's a huge leap to even reach the shadow cast by All Day. There's nothing wrong with setting lofty goals, though.
2. Did you hear the one about the Boise State president berating the University of Idaho? He said the annual game between the Broncos and Vandals will be discontinued because "it's a culture that is nasty, inebriated and civilly doesn't give our fans the respect that any fan should expect when visiting an away game," he told the Idaho Statesman earlier in the week. Has he ever been to a major college football rivalry game? C'mon, lighten up. Plus, if there's any reason to cease playing the game it's because it could mar the Broncos schedule strength once they enter the Mountain West.
Idaho governor Butch Otter urged the game continue and even looked to see if he could legally do anything about it. He can't, so it appears the 2010 installment will be the last.
3. Along similar lines, the Mountain West has said it will remain with nine teams for the time being and Boise may simply replace Utah on the schedule beginning in 2011. In terms of in-state rivalries, MWC commissioner Craig Thompson has said he will do whatever he can to help the BYU-Utah game to remain on the schedule once Utah leaves for the Pac-10. The game is a tradition and has been played every year since 1949. Plus, BYU can be a great primer for the Pac-10 schedule for the Utes. Let's hope it does continue.
A good sign: Utah AD Chris Hill told Deseret News the "expectation" is for the series to continue.
4. Iowa State might be losing one of its best defensive players for at least part of the season. David Sims has been suspended indefinitely and stripped of his co-captain title. The reigning Big 12 defensive newcomer of the year has been charged with unauthorized use of a credit card, an aggravated misdemeanor. He allegedly was in possession of some items purchased with a credit card that had been reported as stolen. Sims had five interceptions and three forced fumbles last season, so it's possible the ballhawk simply got a bit overzealous with his takeaway mentality (so give him a break, please).
5. Finally, we'll close with a funny story: Bo Pelini once told Ndamukong Suh "you stink," (if not worse, and I'm inclined to believe it was worse and Pelini rightly cleaned up the language for the masses).
