Here is what's happening around baseball on Thursday July 29, 2010:• At times a question mark this season, White Sox closer Bobby Jenks alleviated some concerns on the South Side of Chicago Wednesday night with a dominant outing against the Mariners. The narrow 6-5 win helped the Sox maintain their slim one-game edge over the Twins in the AL Central and should give general manager Ken Williams one fewer concern heading toward the July 31 deadline.
"He looked like old Bobby," starting pitcher Mark Buehrle told reporters. "The velocity was up there. He was dominating.
"He had two bad games [last week]. It sucks for a closer or a bullpen to go out there and have one bad inning, and everyone kind of wants your head -- you're losing your job. Everybody has confidence in him. He has to go out there and continue to do what he's doing now."
• It was a fairy-tale debut for highly touted Phillies prospect Domonic Brown Wednesday. The outfielder doubled in Philadelphia's first run in a win over the Diamondbacks and went 2-for-3 with two RBI in his first major league game.
"When I saw him in spring training, one of the biggest things I learned about him was how much he liked to play," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told reporters, "and also that he can take the fat part of the bat and hit the ball. He makes contact a lot -- and good contact. And that tells me that you have a chance to be a real good hitter."
Transaction Wire
• The Tigers have optioned Scott Sizemore to Triple-A to make room for Jhonny Peralta, who was acquired from the Indians on Wednesday.
• The White Sox signed pitcher Jon Adkins to a minor league contract.
Injury Ward
• A's closer Andrew Bailey is likely headed to the disabled list with a ribcage strain, as Oakland needs a roster spot to activate Brett Anderson from the DL Friday.
• Indians starter Mitch Talbot departed Thursday's game against the Yankees in the third inning with a mid-back strain. He'll get an MRI Friday.
• Albert Pujols gave a scare to Cardinals fans and fantasy owners when he pulled up early legging out a potential double play in the 11th inning of St. Louis' win over the Mets. Pujols called it left calf tightness and he did not come out of the game, opting instead to play cautiously.
• Injured Royals pitcher Gil Meche is bracing for his third shoulder surgery, it is just a matter now of who performs the surgery and when he has it.
• Huston Street is expected to be available to pitch Thursday after taking a batting practice line drive to the -- ahem -- groin. Though the Rockies closer is recovering from the injury, which required him to be taken to the hospital, the rehab on his wounded pride may take a little longer, according to the Denver Post.
