LAS VEGAS -- When Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy Promotions' CEO, first came up with the idea during a conference call with officials setting up Saturday night's Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz fight, he said "the line went silent."

"I said, 'We should use an octopus to pick the winner,' and the line went silent as if to say, 'Well, now, he's really lost it,' " recalls Schaefer. "They were like, 'What are you talking about?' And I had to explain, because I'm a big soccer fan, that in the World Cup soccer tournament, they used an octopus to pick the winners, and he was very accurate."

Schaefer meant to duplicate the gimmick initially performed by Paul the Octopus in Germany, who was perfect in his World Cup predictions.

And on Thursday, at the Shark Reef Aquarium at the Mandalay Bay Hotel, where Marquez and Diaz will battle, Schaefer got his wish.
In an excercise that took nearly five minutes to transpire, the Shark Reef's giant octopus -- weighing 40 pounds and measuring six feet from one out-stretched tentacle to the next -- draped itself over a plexiglass box, opened the latch with one its long arms, and ate a large shrimp to the delight and awe of several reporters and television cameras.

The name designated to the opened box was Marquez's, which, for Diaz, could be an ominous sign of things to come.

"I'm glad that it all worked out," said Schaefer, who called the event, "Octo-Pick".

"I thought that it was pretty exciting."
