According to Michael Reagan, eldest son of the 40th president of the United States, if you use one of the most popular providers, the answer is likely an emphatic "yes." And he wants to sell fellow conservatives an alternative.
Reagan, who was adopted by Ronald Reagan and his first wife, Jane Wyman, is a former radio talk show host who works as an author and conservative political activist. Earlier this week, he took to his website to launch his latest crusade/venture:
Reagan went on to announce that he has the antidote to his alleged liberal Internet conspiracy."People who believe in true Reagan Conservative Values are unwittingly supporting the Obama, Pelosi and Reid liberal agenda! What do I mean? Well, every time you use your e-mail from companies like Google, AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail, Apple and others, you are helping the liberals. These companies are and will continue to be huge supporters financially and with technology of those that are hurting our country."
"I came up with the very first conservative e-mail service provider," he said. "You now can put your name next to the name of the Greatest Conservative of all, my father, Ronald Reagan."
Billed as "the only Conservative e-mail," an @Reagan.com account goes for $34.95 per year.
"The proceeds from this conservative initiative will help me promote true Reagan values to win back our country in November and in 2012," Reagan added.
When AOL News asked for specific examples of e-mail providers' left-wing ties, Reagan spokesman Elias Chavando cited Al Gore's seat on Apple's board of directors, as well as contributions made by Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page to a same-sex marriage campaign in California.
Reagan's site also notes that "more than 71 percent of Microsoft's political contributions went to Democrats and Barack Obama," and that members of the board of AOL are "large contributors to Democrats." (A spokesman for AOL, which owns AOL News, said the company did not comment on personal political donations by its board members.)
Along with his website, Reagan uses social-networking site Facebook and micro-blogging service Twitter to promote his views and ventures.
By his own measure, however, those efforts may be undermining any gains he makes with his @Reagan.com rollout. That's because Facebook's founders, of course, include a big supporter of Obama, while Twitter creator and CEO Jack Dorsey is an ascendant Democratic power broker.
