'Start the Future': BrewDog's 'End of History' Surpassed as World's Strongest Beer

(July 30) -- Just a week after reaching the top, BrewDog's recent stint as brewer of the world's most alcoholic beer is history.

The Scottish brewery, which introduced the aptly named 55 percent alcohol by volume beverage known as the End of History, has been ousted by Dutch brewery 't Koelschip (The Refrigerated Ship) and its even more aptly named 60 percent ABV beer Start the Future. Take that, BrewDog.

While you won't find either beverage on tap at your local pub, Start the Future is also considerably more affordable, valued at 29 British pounds ($45.50) as compared to the 500 British pounds ($770) price tag on The End of History. Another major difference (and possible explanation for the price disparity) is that while BrewDog's super-beer is packaged inside the carcass of a dead animal -- squirrel, hare or stoat -- the 't Koelschip beverage comes in an old-fashioned glass bottle.

Some observers have called the back-and-forth between brewers the "Beer Wars," but Jan Nijboer, the brewer from 't Koelschip, insists it's just a healthy, delicious rivalry. "It has become a little competition," Nijboer told the Dutch news outlet ANP. "You should see it as a joke."
