If you're a San Jose Sharks fan you have to love the deal general manager Doug Wilson was able to work out with Devin Setoguchi on Saturday, signing the 23-year-old winger to a one-year contract worth a reported $1.8 million. It appears to be a bargain for the Sharks, seeing as how Blake Wheeler was recently awarded over $2 million in an arbitration case this past week. Setoguchi scored 20 goals -- his second consecutive 20-goal season -- for the Sharks in 70 regular season games this year, and then added five goals in the playoffs, including an overtime winner during Game 2 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals against the Colorado Avalanche.
His numbers dropped this year after a breakout campaign during the 2008-09 season, when he recorded 31 goals and 34 assists, spending quite a bit of time on a line with Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. This year most of his even strength shifts were spent with either Thornton and Dany Heatley, or Joe Pavelski and Ryane Clowe.
He still has quite a bit of upside and plenty of talent, and is an established 20-goal scorer in the NHL, making this a very quality signing for the Sharks. The deal still leaves San Jose with about $3.7 million in cap space this summer -- via CapGeek -- which is enough room to perhaps add another player along the blue line. A couple of weeks ago the Sharks took a run at restricted free agent Niklas Hjalmarsson, only to have Chicago match the four-year offer sheet.
On Thursday, the Sharks signed 22-year-old defenseman Jason Demers to a two-year contract extension worth $1.25 million per season.
