The Dodgers got help for their bullpen by acquiring Pirates closer Octavio Dotel just minutes before Saturday's deadline. The Dodgers sent pitcher James McDonald and minor league outfielder Andrew Lambo to Pittsburgh.Dotel has 21 saves for the last-place Pirates. He has just over $1 million remaining on his contract this year, about half of which will be covered by the $500,000 the Pirates are sending to Los Angeles.
Dotel, 36, has been a late-inning reliever or closer for eight other teams.
Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said Dotel would go into the Dodgers' bullpen mix "somewhere between the sixth and the eighth," setting up for Jonathan Broxton.
McDonald, 25, has an 8.22 ERA in four major league games this year. He is 5-6 with a 4.11 ERA in 11 career big league games. He was 6-1 with a 4.41 ERA this year at Triple-A.
Lambo, a 21-year-old, was the Dodgers' fourth-round pick in 2007. He is hitting .271 with a .745 OPS at Double-A. Lambo was suspended for 50 games earlier this season because of a violation of baseball's drug policy. There were reports the drug he tested positive for was marijuana.
Dotel's club option for $4.5 million for 2011 becomes a mutual option by virtue of the trade. The club must first exercise the option or pay a $500,000 buyout. If the club exercises the option, Dotel must also exercise his half of the option then.
