The Dodgers have completed a trade that will bring pitcher Ted Lilly and infielder Ryan Theriot to Los Angeles in exchange for infielder Blake DeWitt and two right-handed pitching prospects -- Kyle Smit and Brett Wallach.

The Dodgers will also get $2.5 million from the Cubs in the deal to help offset the additional salary they are taking on in the deal, a source told FanHouse. Lilly, a left-hander set to be a free agent after this season, is signed for $12 million this year, while Theriot is signed for $2.6 million.

Talks between the two clubs picked up steam Saturday morning, sources told FanHouse's Steve Phillips and Tom Krasovic, but hit a slight snag because of L.A.'s desire to get Theriot as well in the deal.

L.A. has run through a number of unsatisfying options at the back-end of its rotation, including Charlie Haeger, Jon Ely and Carlos Monasterios, and Lilly provides a solid fix there.

"In Ted Lilly we're getting a guy who will give stability to our rotation," said Dodgers manager Joe Torre, who had Lilly with the Yankees. "I've had Ted Lilly before and I know he's a competitor. ... He's a big-league starter. I believe he'll be an upgrade to our staff."

Lilly, 34, is just 3-8 despite his 3.69 ERA and has allowed just 104 hits in 117 innings, with 29 walks. His four-year, $40 million contract is up at the end of the season.

Torre said Lilly is expected to join the Dodgers on Sunday, and he may make his Los Angeles debut on Tuesday against the Padres at Dodger Stadium.

Theriot, a 30-year-old middle infielder, is hitting .284 in 96 games for the Cubs this year.

DeWitt, a light hitter who has played second base, third base and shortstop in the majors, is hitting .270 with one home run and 30 RBI in 82 games this year.

Torre said his impression was that the Cubs had to have DeWitt to make the deal work. He said, from the Dodgers standpoint, Theriot offers a more experienced version of DeWitt. Theriot will be the Dodgers everyday second baseman, and he'll hit toward the bottom of the order. Torre even suggested he may hit ninth, acting as a second leadoff man.

Smit, a reliever who reached Double-A this year, was 5-3 with six saves and a 2.35 ERA in 37 minor-league appearances between Single-A Inland Empire and Double-A Chattanooga.

Wallach was 6-0 with a 3.72 ERA in 17 starts at Single-A Great Lakes. He has struck out 92 batters in 84 2/3 innings.
