Here is what's happening around baseball on Saturday July 31, 2010:• Tim Lincecum has altered his windup ever so slightly. Starting Friday night, Lincecum began bringing his hands over his head as he came through his windup. It's something he did in college, and it helps him stay back a little longer as he strides toward the plate.
"I feel like I feel a little more smooth, a little bit more in rhythm and a little more 'collected,'" said Lincecum.
• We'll find out Saturday if Lance Berkman's trade to the Yankees becomes official, but in the meantime he's praising the only club he has ever played for, the Astros, for tearing things down and rebuilding.
"Whether it's the right direction or not, at least it's a direction," Berkman told reporters. "The worst thing as an organization is to get stale and sort of get caught in a washing machine of the same old things that happen year after year and you don't really make any strides."
Reports, by the way, that he nixed a deal to the White Sox are true, said Chicago general manager Kenny Williams.
• There has been growing concern over the struggles of Tigers closer Jose Valverde, and those worries were amplified Friday night when he threw 60 pitches and gave up a grand slam before finally closing out the Red Sox.
• Mike Lowell is hoping Saturday brings something he has wanted for months, a deal out of Boston and into enhanced playing time.
Transaction Wire
• The Indians activated Kerry Wood from the disabled list. He replaced the recently traded Austin Kearns on Cleveland's active roster.
Injury Ward
• X-rays on on Martin Prado's injured right pinkie revealed a "stable avulsion fracture" but the Braves don't know yet if he'll go on the DL. He might be able to return in seven to 10 days.
