Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz will be the main event of a boxing card Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Main Event
Juan Manuel Marquez defeats Juan Diaz via unanimous decision

Jorge Linares (29-1, 18 KOs), Barinas, Venezuela, by 10-round unanimous decision over Rocky Juarez (28-7-1, 20 KOs), Houston, Tex., for the WBA Fedelatin lightweight (135 pounds) title.

Judges: Dave Moretti scored it 99-90, Ricardo Ocasio, 99-90, and, Al Lefkowitz, 97-92, all for Linares.

Round 1: The taller Linares circled slightly to start against the notoriously slow starting Jaurez, firing a piston-like jab and dipping to the body with a hard right. Juarez came back with a nice left hook. Linares continued to jab as Jaurez tried to cut off the ring. Linares hooked with his left effectively and was busier. Jaurez fired a left and then a right, but took another hard jab. Jaurez connected with a right to the body but took a right-left combination. Linares, 10-9.


Round 2: Jaurez stepped forward and stretch his long left up-jab, but Linares kept his distance and jabbed effectively as well. Linares doubled up on the jab and also hooked twice. Along the ropes, Jaurez landed a left to the body before Linares escaped. Linares landed a nice left uppercut that got the crowd's attention, and then continued with his strong jab, followed by a right to the body. Linares' hard left hook landed as did a right to the body. Jaurez connected with a left to the body, and then five more jabs and a left hook before the round ended. Linares, 10-9; Linares, 20-18.

Round 3: The thudding left continued to be the primary factor for the long-armed, taller Linares, who also fired left hooks and uppercuts as well. Jaurez landed a right but took a left uppercut. Jaurez lands a right to the body and takes two more jabs. Linares counters a right by Jaurez with a left hook. Linares is blocking many of Juarez's punches and coming back with the jab. On his toes, Linares pops back Jaurez's head with a ripping jab. Jaurez rips hope two right hands to the body but takes two lefts to the body. Linares, 10-9; Linares, 30-27.

Round 4: Linares begins by ripping two left uppercuts to the jaw. Jaurez briefly has Linares on the ropes but does not take advantage, and soon, Linares is jabbing and moving once more. Jaurez connects with a left to the body. Three unanswered jabs by Linares, and then, a left-right combination by Linares. Two more left uppercuts by Linares. Juarez connects with a right to the jaw and appears to be picking up the pace. Two nice jabs by Jaurez, but Linares still is busier. Linares doubles up on his jab and then lands a third. Linares doubles up on the left hook. The two exchange evenly at the bell, with Linares' back against the ropes. Linares, 10-9; Linares, 40-36.

Round 5: Linares continues to pop the jab, Jaurez continues to follow. Jaurez appears to be picking up the pace as the crowd chants his name. Linares stays behind the jab, doubling and tripling up on it. Jaurez connects with a right to the jaw. Linares takes it. Jaurez lands a left-right combination that foces a clinch. Linares connects with a left uppercut that causes Jaurez to fall on his backside. It was a delayed reaction, but he went down. He was up quickly as the bell sounded ending the round. Linares, 10-8; Linares, 50-44.

Round 6: Jaurez has no answer for Linares' left hand, which is landing off of hooks and uppercuts and jabs. A wicked left jab rocks back Jaurez head, as do a subsequent left uppercut and jab by Linares. Linares digs another left uppercut up the middle. Two more jabs by Linares. Jaurez lands two left hooks and they clinch. Linares clips Jaurez with another left jab and a left hook. Linares, 10-9; Linares, 60-53.

Round 7: The pace continues as with all of the previous six rounds, Linares boxing, Jaurez plodding in pursuit. Jaurez misses with a right and a left. Jaurez takes a left upperut. Linares continues to pot-shot on his toes or dig in with left hooks and uppercuts. When Jaurez gets close, he covers up or clinches. Another nice jab pops back Linares' head. Linares clips Jaurez with an overhand right. Linares round, 10-9; Linares, 70-62.

Round 8: Linares lands five punches before Jaurez even throws one, starting with a left jab and a left hook. Jaurez fires and lands two jabs. They clinch. Linars fires and is successful with a five-punch combination. Two more thudding jabs from Linares. Jaurez lands twice to the body but takes two punches to the body. Linares digs in again with two left uppercuts and moves away. Three and four unanswered jabs land by Linares. Jaurez misses with a left hook. Linares triples up on the jab. Linares digs in three left uppercuts to the jaw. Linares, 10-9; Linares, 80-71.

Round 9: Three, four, five jabs land by Linares as Jaurez misses. Jaurez fires away during a clinch, but many of his punches are blocked or ineffective. Jaurez comes over the top with a nice right hand. Jaurez lands another right hand and then another, the last shaking Linares. Linares left hooks to the head, Jaurez comes back to the body. Jaurez lands three left hooks and a long right hand. Jaurez comes with a left-right and Linares moves away. Jaurez closes with a hard right and then a left hook and another left. Juarez, 10-9; Linares, 89-81.

Round 10: Jaurez misses with a wild left. Jaurez connects with a left and then a right and digs a hard left to the body. Linares jabs and moves away, but Jaurez is on him. A hard up-jab lands by Jaurez. Jaurez eats a jab and lands a right hand over the top. Jaurez takes a three-punch combination but answers with a left-right of his own. Jaurez stuns Linares with a right hand. Linares is puffy beneath his right eye. Jaurez lands three jabs and then goes to the body with two right hands.Juarez continues to come forward firing away. Linares lands three left hooks at the bell. Jaurez, 10-9; Linares, 98-91.

Linares out-landed Juarez, 193-to-83, in total punches, 96-30, in jabs, and, 97-53, in power punches.


Jorge Linares: "I was fighting with one hand from the beginning of the fight. When I dropped him, it hurt my left hand. I had to be really careful because he was really dangerous and he could really take a punch. I was never tired, but I was always worrying about his experience. I don't want the little belt. Now, I want the world title next."

Rocky Juarez: "I feel good, but he clearly won the fight. He fought a smart fight. I couldn't catch my rhythm, and I didn't do what we worked on in the gym. I'm not sure what's next. I have to seriously think about it."


Robert Guerrero (27-1-1, 18 KOs), Gilroy, CA., by 10-round unanimous decision over Joel Casamayor (37-5-1, 22 KOs), Guantanamo, Cuba, in a clash of junior welterweights (140 pounds)

Judges: Robert Hoyle and Dick Houck had it 98-89, and Lisa Giampa, 97-90, all for Guerrero.

Round 1:
The clash of southpaws began with Guerrero coming forward, Casamayor boxing in retreat. Guerrero fires and misses with a right, then comes back with a left to the body. Guerrero lands and overhand left, but takes one as well. Guerrero jabs to the body and lands a short right to the head. Guerrero shakes Casamayor with a left, fight, left combination. Guerrero, 10-9,

Round 2: Guerrero pumped out three jabs early, one of which landed. Two more short jabs and a left hand. Casamayor goes down, but it is ruled a slip by referee Jay Nady. Casamayor is penalized a point for grabbing and holding. A jab and a missed left hand by Guerrero. Guerrero lands a short, counter left hand to the jaw during an exchange. Guerrero lands a hard right hook. The 39-year-old Casamayor struggles to find his pace. Guerrero drops Casamayor with a right and a left and he goes down. He's up at the count of two and finishes the round. Guerrero, 10-7; Guerrero, 20-16.

Round 3: Casamayor lands a nice right hand, but takes a succession of punches. The jab is steady from Guerrero, who lands a long left hand. Guerrero keeps Casamayor at bay with the right jab and is looking to land the left hand behind it. Casamayor clips him with a left. Guerrero fires a right hook and three jabs to end the round. Guerrero, 10-9; 30-25.

Round 4: Guerrero starts with three jabs and lands a left uppercut. Casamayor comes with a nice right jab but can't seem to sustain an attack. Guerrero is jabbing and hooking with the same hand. Guerrero connects with a crisp left hand. Guerrero is holding Casamayor at bay with his jab. A lull in the action for this round. Guerrero, 10-9; Guerrero, 40-34.

Round 5: The pace is the same, Guerrero chasing, Casamayor running. Casamayor, however, stands his ground for a time before taking a crisp left hand. Guerrero digs a shot to the body, Casamayor counters. Guerrero lands jab to the body and continues to hold off Casamayor with that right hand. Guerrero, 10-9; Guerrero, 50-43.

Round 6: Guerrero hooks with his right and connects. The long right hand jab continues to trouble the older Casamayor. A short right uppercut connects for Guerrero. A left hand lands for Guerrero, who pushes Casamayor to the canvas with his right hand. It's ruled a slip. Guerrero shakes and hurts Casamayor with a left hand late in the round. Casamayor survives as the bell sounds. Guerrero, 10-9; Guerrero, 60-52.

Round 7: A long, lead left gets Casamayor early and shakes him. Two more left hooks by Guerrero find the mark. Guerrero appears to be looking for the KO, landing two, hard left hands. Guerrero triples up on the right hook and they clinch. Patiently working behind his right jab, Guerrero lands a left hand just before the bell. Guerrero, 10-9; Guerrero, 70-61.

Round 8: Casamayor is warned early for holding. Guerrero goes back to the thudding right jab. An overhand left connects to the broad side of Casamayor's jaw. Casamayor continues to move away, side to side. Guerrero stays with the jab. An uneventful round that goes to Guerrero based on his jab. Guerrero, 10-9; Guerrero, 80-70.

Round 9: Guerrero seems to back off from the pace of the fifth and sixth rounds. He does connect with a right hook and a subsequent jab. Very little action. Guerrero lands a long left hand before the bell. Guerrero, 10-9; Guerrero, 90-79.

Round 10: More of the same from the previous round -- until Guerrero connects with a short left. Casamayor drops Guerrero with a short left hand, and he's up at the count of seven. Guerrero doesn't appear to be hurt too badly, and Casamayor does not follow up effectively. Casamayor lands a long right hand, but Guerrero dances and remains on his feet. Casamayor, 10-8; Guerrero, 98-89.

Dmitry Pirog (17-0, 14 KOs), of Temryuk, Russia, by fifth round knockout over Daniel Jacobs (20-1, 17 KOs), of Brooklyn, NY, at 1:57 of the round for the vacant WBO middleweight (160 pounds) title.

Round 1: Jacobs fought in retreat for the first part of the first round, with Pirog firing a long jab, connecting with a right hand at one point. The Pirog jab is effective, as was his head movement. Jacobs stepped in and cracks home a left that Pirog takes well. Pirog jabs to the body and head. Pirog connects with a grazing right and a right uppercut. Pirog lands a crackling right hand along the ropes. Pirog, 10-9.

Round 2:
Pirog hurts Jacobs early with an overhand right that almost drops him in a corner and follows up with a succession of blows, including left hooks to the body and to the head followed by crisp right hand that causesJacobs to cover up. A head-swiveling left uppercut hurts Jacobs again. Pirog stays behind the jab and bring with it left uppercuts and right crosses. His pressure is relentless. Jacobs tries to come back with jabs, but they are not enough to keep Pirog off of him. Pirog, 10-9; Pirog, 20-18.

Round 3: Pirog remains with his strategy of jabbing and moving forward out of a crotch. Jacobs appears to be rushing his jab, but does land three straight and a right hand. On his toes, Jacobs lands three more jabs. Pirog gives ground for the first time. Jacobs lands a long, lead right and, later, another overhand right. Pirog digs to the body, but Jacobs goes back to jabbing and moving. Jacobs clubs Pirog with a thudding right hand before the bell. Jacobs, 10-9; 29-28, Pirog.

Round 4: A nice left to the jaw by Jacobs is the first telling blow of the round. Jacobs has his jab working well. A right hand clips Pirog. Pirog comes with a long, overhand right. Jacobs doubles up on left hook to the body and head. Jacobs lands a right hand. Jacobs continues to box and cover up along the ropes. Pirog continues to pressure, landing an overhand right along the ropes. Jacobs backs up Pirog with a three-punch combination. Jacobs lands a double-left hook to the jaw before the bell. Jacobs, 10-9; Even 38-38.

Round 5: Jacobs lands to the body and head with a hook. Jacobs lands a three-punch combination and moves away. Pirog blast out Jacobs with a hard, overhand right that lands perfectly over Jacobs' lazy left jab. Jacobs lands on his back with his arms out to the side in the shape of a crucifix. Robert Byrd stands over him and does not even bother to count. There is a brief protest by Jacobs, but Byrd is insistent that the bout is done. FIGHT'S OVER, PIROG BY FIFTH-ROUND KNOCKOUT AT 1:57 OF THE ROUND.

Pirog trailed on all three judges cards, three rounds to one, or, 39-37, at the time of the knockout.
