Searching for catching depth with Victor Martinez just off the disabled list and Jason Varitek still on it, the Red Sox struck a deal with Texas for Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The switch-hitting catcher, 25, has played parts of four seasons in the majors, posting a .251 career average and struggling to find his footing in the big leagues, but he remains a respected talent, who has not entered his prime.
Saltalamacchia has spent most of this season at Triple-A Oklahoma City, hitting .244 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI in 63 games there.
Boston sent two minor-leaguers -- right-handed pitcher Roman Mendez and first baseman Chris McGuinness -- to Texas in exchange for Saltalamacchia, and it will also include a player to be named and cash considerations.
Mendez, pitching in short-season Single-A ball at Lowell (Mass.), has gone 2-3 with a 4.36 ERA.
McGuiness, 22, was hitting .298 with 12 homers and 46 RBI at low Single-A Greenville (S.C.).
