The Royals obviously are pleased with the job Ned Yost has done since taking over as their interim manager, but they chose to announce that the interim tag had been removed on perhaps the busiest day of the baseball calendar. Lost in the shuffle of a flurry of last-minute trades Saturday -- including one that saw Kansas City offload Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth to Atlanta -- the Royals announced they have signed Yost to a contract that runs through the 2012 season.
Yost is 31-37 since taking over for the fired Trey Hillman on May 14. The former Brewers manager (2003-08) had signed on with the Royals' front office as a special advisor in January.
Yost has a long history with Royals general manager Dayton Moore, who was part of Atlanta's front office during Yost's long tenure on Bobby Cox's coaching staff. In theory, anyway, Yost might have been a candidate to return to the Braves and replace the retiring Cox, but most expect that job to go to another former Cox lieutenant, former Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez.
