The 2010 FIBA World Championship kicked off August 28 in Turkey. Twenty-four nations qualified for the tournament through regional play and competed in round-robin play in four groups from August 28 through September 2. At that point, the top four teams in each group advanced to a single-elimination tournament in Istanbul to decide the world championship, with the final scheduled for September 12, 2010.

Spain is the defending world champion, having defeated Greece in Saitama, Japan, in 2006. Greece had beaten the United States in the semifinals, relegating the so-called Redeem Team to a bronze medal. Team USA came back two years later to claim Olympic victory, however, beating Spain in Beijing in 2008 for the gold. But no players from that U.S. team will play in Turkey, while Spain returns eight players from Beijing.
