Spain is the defending world champion, having defeated Greece in Saitama, Japan, in 2006. Greece had beaten the United States in the semifinals, relegating the so-called Redeem Team to a bronze medal. Team USA came back two years later to claim Olympic victory, however, beating Spain in Beijing in 2008 for the gold. But no players from that U.S. team will play in Turkey, while Spain returns eight players from Beijing.
