Argentina, the defending FIBA World Champions, will go to the 2010 tournament in Turkey without ace Manu Ginobili, but otherwise remained optimistic. Luis Scola has received clearance to play, and other NBA-level players like Carlos Delfino and Fabricio Oberto are on board. Andres Nocioni, traded to the 76ers in June, was expected to help fill the Manu void.Unfortunately, Nocioni injured his left ankle Saturday, consigning him to a boot and crutches for the near-term. FIBA.com reports Argentina's trainers remain hopeful El Chapu will be able to suit up by the time his team tips off on August 28 against Germany, but it's all in question.
Argentina's in no real danger of being eliminated in group play -- the top four in each group advance to the 16-team knockout round, which means the Argentines would have to fall behind not just Serbia and Australia, but also two of Jordan, Angola and Germany to be eliminated before Sept. 4. So if Nocioni needs another week, his team should be safe.
