Donald Brashear's brief tenure with the New York Rangers came to a rather uneventful end on Monday morning, as the club traded him, along with minor league forward Patrick Rissmiller, to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for veteran forward Todd White. Brashear signed a two-year contract with the Rangers prior to last season, which was a rather unpopular move among fans after his hit -- as member of the Washington Capitals -- on Blair Betts during the previous year's playoffs.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the Thrashers have already placed Brashear on waivers and intend to buy out his contract. He ended up playing just 36 games for the Rangers last season, scoring no goals, recording one assist and registering 73 penalty minutes. The 38-year-old Brashear carries a $1.4 million cap hit.

Rissmiller hasn't played in the NHL since the 2008-09 season, having spent all of last year in the American Hockey League with Grand Rapids and Hartford. He's 31 and has scored 18 goals in the NHL, all with the San Jose Sharks.

As for the Rangers, they're acquiring the 35-year-old White and his $2.375 salary cap hit for this season. He'll be an unrestricted free agent next summer. He's coming off an injury-shortened season that saw him play just 65 games for the Thrashers, scoring seven goals to go with 19 assists. Just two years ago White had a career-year with Atlanta, recording 22 goals and 53 assists while playing all 82 games.

The trade has to be considered a win for the Rangers, seeing as how they're getting a capable NHL forward that can provide a little bit of offense -- which they need -- while giving up nothing in return.

Last week the Rangers added what they hope will be more secondary scoring to their lineup by signing former Los Angeles Kings forward Alexander Frolov to a one-year contract. According to CapGeek the Rangers have about $465,000 in available cap space with 22 players signed for this season.
