The French national team suffered a second major loss Friday when it was reported Rodrigue Beaubois had broken his foot in training. But unlike the absence of Joakim Noah, who is sitting out of the 2010 FIBA World Championship due to contract negotiations with the Bulls, this is bad news for Beaubois' NBA team. If Beaubois requires surgery, he'll be on the shelf for three months, putting his availability at the beginning of the season in jeopardy, reports Bill Nichols of the Dallas Morning News.Beaubois did major damage in limited minutes as a rookie for Dallas, breaking out in most public fashion in Game 6 of the Mavericks' first-round playoff loss to the Spurs. He was expected to be a major rotation player at the least in the 2010-11 season; Carlisle has even been quoted suggesting he might start next to or over veteran Jason Kidd. Many feel Beaubois can be the premier perimeter scorer Dirk Nowitzki needs for pressure-relief. Roddy certainly showed signs of that as a rookie.
That makes the injury all the more unfortunate. Of course, it's unfortunate for the French team, who really looks talented enough to play for a medal but can't suffer many more losses. As for the Mavs, let's hope Beaubois is ready by mid-October. Early injuries have a way of ruining seasons, even if the player is healed by Opening Night. The Mavericks -- nay, the league can not afford to miss out on Beaubois.
France is ranked No. 7 in FanHouse's FIBA World Power Rankings.
