An arbitrator ruled that the NHL acted justly when it voided all-star forward Ilya Kovalchuk's multi-year contract with the New Jersey Devils.

Monday's decision by arbitrator Richard Bloch effectively makes Kovalchuk, who inked a controversial 17-year deal worth $102 million on July 19, an unrestricted free agent once again. The league revoked the contract two days after the deal was announced.

"We want to thank arbitrator Bloch for his prompt resolution of a complex issue," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement. "His ruling is consistent with the League's view of the manner in which the collective bargaining agreement should deal with contracts that circumvent the Salary Cap."

The NHL Players' Association said in a statement that it was reviewing its options in the wake of the ruling.

"The NHLPA is disappointed with the Arbitrator's ruling to uphold the NHL's rejection of the contract between the New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk," NHLPA spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon said.
