Titans Defensive End Derrick Morgan Struggles with Calf Injury
And with the Titans being very cautious with the defensive end from Georgia Tech, Morgan told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean he expects to miss the preseason opener.
Morgan, out with a new calf injury, told Wyatt the biggest concern now is re-injuring the area and risking another setback.
"It is feeling better, but there's no timetable," he said.Morgan, after missing time with a similar calf injury in the off season, re-injured a different part of the same calf in his first training camp practice two weeks ago. He had signed with the Titans the night before.
Wyatt reported that Morgan has been jogging and working to rehabilitate the area, and Morgan told Wyatt it could take a week to return once he is cleared to practice.
"That's what is so frustrating,'' Morgan said. "I worked so hard during the off season. I am not going to say I am not in shape now, but I can't be out there like I want to. I am doing things in the weight room, trying to get my cardio in.''
This has been a training camp saga for the Titans, and certainly will continue to be so until Morgan returns. Rookie pass rushers often take a while to adapt to the NFL whatever their talent level, with stories such as Jevon Kearse's breakout rookie season in 1999 for the Titans relatively rare. The Titans certainly would like an impact from Morgan sooner rather than later, but each day out in camp can't help his early progress.
